La presente investigación expone las formas en las que las prácticas agrícolas que permiten construir una soberanía alimentaria también contribuyen a incrementar el empoderamiento comunitario y a alcanzar la sostenibilidad en las localidades de Cristóbal Colón y Las Pavas, provincia de Esmeraldas- Ecuador. Estos poblados, a pesar de compartir espacio geográfico, difieren en sus costumbres, tradiciones y modos de vida. El recinto Cristóbal Colón está habitado por colonos, mientras que la comunidad de Las Pavas es territorio de la nacionalidad indígena chachi.
El locus de estudio se encuentra en el Chocó Ecuatoriano, una zona con legado histórico de explotación antrópica de recursos naturales en la que la industria maderera y agroindustrial, en su búsqueda por obtener mayores réditos económicos, ha coartado la implementación de una actividad agrícola armónica con el ambiente (Minda 2004, 107).
