La violencia en Ecuador se ha incrementado, se ha diversificado y se ha hecho mucho más violenta. En esta evolución mucho tienen que ver dos situaciones que actúan de manera interrelacionada: por un lado, a los cambios en la dinámica propia de la violencia, hoy altamente vinculada al narcotráfico; y por otro, a las erráticas políticas del Gobierno nacional, enmarcadas en las lógicas del Estado mínimo y de una mano dura anacrónica. En esta confrontación del crimen con el gobierno, el escenario territorial ha sido determinante: el Estado nacional está perdiendo soberanía territorial en ciertos barrios de las ciudades más violentas y las organizaciones criminales van produciendo un territorio unificado del crimen.
