Este Viracocha amazónico, héroe civilizador y a la vez figura del panteón cristiano, es todavía uno de los personajes centrales del conjunto mítico de los indígenas Quichuas del alto Napo en la Amazonía ecuatoriana. Representa el prototipo de articulación dinámica entre dos concepciones y prácticas simbólicas mediante la cual los Napo Quichuas han logrado ejercer la capacidad creativa de su cultura, tratando de acomodar las nuevas realidades históricas, a través de cuatrocientos años de evangelización. La persistencia de este mito es también un símbolo de la resistencia de los Napo Quichuas a hacer tabula rasa de sus propios significados culturales, para reemplazarlos con la definición de la realidad impuesta por un sistema de dominación que utilizó a los misioneros como mensajeros de su credo civilizador.
