Guatemala es el único país en América Latina donde los indígenas todavía constituyen la mayoría de la población. En la actualidad, el récord de genocidio y etnocidio contra los indios, perpetrado por el gobierno de Guatemala, es el peor de América Latina. Muchas razones, ahora escondidas en la pasada y presente historia de Guatemala pueden ayudar a explicar esta situación, pero los indígenas la ven como la consecuencia directa de sus esfuerzos para organizarse —junto con los ladinos pobres— para luchar por sus derechos y para iniciar un proceso de profundo cambio social en su propio país.
