Esta publicación compila siete investigaciones realizadas en territorios indígenas y afroecuatorianos de la Costa y la Amazonía ecuatoriana. Las investigaciones abordaron dimensiones importantes para la gestión integral de territorios indígenas y exploraron los procesos y dinámicas que ocurren al interior de dichos territorios. Los diferentes procesos territoriales abordados por estas investigaciones permitieron dividir en libro en tres partes. La primera aborda los procesos de consolidación de un territorio y los procesos de institucionalización y gubernamentalización de los procesos, así como también los pormenores de la construcción de un sistema de gobernanza en el territorio awá. La segunda parte del libro presenta tres investigaciones que exploran los procesos de consolidación de las identidades territoriales y los usos políticos, ambientales y simbólicos que se hacen de dichas identidades. La tercera parte del libro presenta dos investigaciones que analizan la relación de los territorios indígenas con las áreas protegidas y con procesos exógenos como el mercado. Por supuesto que los conflictos y las tensiones de dichas interacciones son aspectos discutidos y analizados en esta parte del libro.
