Si bien es cierto los trabajos sobre temas de integración subregional son bastantes; esta tesis intenta abordar esta temática, pero desde la perspectiva ecuatoriana, no desde visiones generales, y tratando de presentar una visión de conjunto que contempla el análisis de las relaciones con cada uno de los países, y en tomo a los temas centrales de la agenda: seguridad, narcotráfico, derechos humanos, comercio extra regional e inversiones. Las fuentes utilizadas para el presente trabajo han sido diversas, desde los convenios, acuerdos, documentos oficiales y datos estadísticos hasta la literatura de relaciones internacionales aplicada a la investigación. El trabajo está dividido en cuatro capítulos, el primero, analiza lo que ha sido la agenda de política exterior tradicional del Ecuador frente a la Comunidad Andina, el segundo, trata sobre las relaciones del Ecuador con cada uno de los países miembro de la Comunidad Andina, el tercero aborda la nueva agenda de política exterior del Ecuador con la Comunidad Andina, incorporando temas como la seguridad, la democracia, el narcotráfico, los derechos humanos y la agenda social, finalmente el cuarto capítulo analiza lo que ha sido el proceso político del Ecuador en la Comunidad Andina.
