El Ecuador enfrenta complicados escenarios en materia de recursos naturales, algunos comunes a la región latinoamericana por sus características de desarrollo, dependencia económica y niveles tecnológicos alcanzados, y otros propios de la dinámica interna, fronterizas, las contradicciones entre petróleo y biodiversidad, los proyectos de inversión en áreas protegidas y la contaminación atmosférica, pero también muestra notables esfuerzos como el alcanzado con la ley especial de Galápagos que además fortalece los estatutos para la reserva marina de este imponente archipiélago y de sus aguas interiores, y el cambio de paradigma jurídico en el Ecuador al consagrar a la naturaleza como sujeto de derecho, al ambiente como un derecho colectivo y que asume el desarrollo sustentable como un objetivo histórico.
