Esta obra se enmarca en una nueva forma de entender las presiones de la actividad económica sobre el medio ambiente, pues a la evaluación monetaria tradicional se incorpora el análisis de la dimensión biofísica que caracteriza a la economía. En efecto, a través de la construcción de un conjunto de indicadores de flujos de materiales se cuantifican las cantidades de recursos naturales que se emplean y que se desechan de los sistemas productivos del Ecuador, mostrando la dependencia de la economía respecto del medio ambiente. Además, el novedoso análisis de los flujos ocultos vinculados a la actividad bananera en el país, permite dimensionar las secuelas físicas del proceso extractivo orientado hacia el mercado externo.
Esta aplicación metodológica es interesante no solo para especialistas del campo de la Economía Ecológica, sino también para científicos sociales de otras disciplinas y quienes buscan este tipo de herramientas de análisis para la definición de políticas orientadas hacia la sostenibilidad.
