La época colonial está muy lejos de ser solo una época histórica que involucra a América en los despojos de sus tierras. La colonialidad del poder fue el mecanismo perfecto que utilizó el imperialismo para subordinar a los pueblos originarios y a las personas africanas esclavizadas. A partir de la colonialidad se inventa la clasificación racial, ubicando a las personas negras en el último eslabón, deshumanizándolos y considerándolos animales salvajes.
A pesar de la resistencia de estos pueblos en aquella época, los rezagos del colonialismo siguen marcando la vida de las mujeres afroecuatorianas. Esto debido a la imbricación de sus características identitarias como su condición étnica y su condición de género, lo que las posiciona en una situación particular de opresión, exclusión y discriminación hasta el día de hoy.
