La crisis financiera puso al descubierto en España las limitaciones de un modelo económico oxidado, basado fundamentalmente en el turismo y la construcción que crecía bajo el amparo de la especulación urbanística.
La sociedad, alejada en su mayoría de las estructuras organizadas de participación política y social, percibió positivamente las propuestas de la plataforma Democracia Real Ya (DRY).
