Es muy bienvenida esta publicación que por fin trata de analizar el conflicto en sí y no necesariamente -aunque también a eso se dedica- a cómo resolverlo, tal como está de moda el hacerlo. El conflicto fue un eje central de la constitución de las ciencias sociales, a un punto que la sociología del cambio nació estrechamente relacionada a la idea del conflicto social. Las diversas corrientes analíticas marcaron sus diferencias en el modo de abordarlo. La vida política contemporánea ha querido minimizar el hecho social de los conflictos e inclusive a todos. Se los ha considerado posibles de ser resueltos sin llegar a su exacerbación. En la actualidad, los conflictos de todo tipo, empero, se han multiplicado incluido en su forma extrema que es la guerra. Bien cabe retomar el tema.
Dos órdenes de razonamientos entran en juego en el análisis de Fontaine, por un lado el cómo entender los movimientos y los conflictos socio- ambientales y, por el otro, saber lo que revelan estos conflictos concretos en Ecuador y en Colombia.
