Nuestro aporte en esta investigación consistirá en evidenciar que entre 1861 y 1889 el diezmo en el Ecuador constituyó una institución que, además de haber sido un impuesto para el erario defendido por conservadores y criticado por liberales, fue un espacio de representación de la política y la sociedad postcolonial caracterizado por una conflictiva articulación entre Estado y sociedad civil. Y es merced a ese conflicto hallado en lo local - muchas veces acallado - que podremos visibilizar y darle el correspondiente peso al rol de los “subalternos” en la construcción de Estado y ciudadanía tributante, a la par del proyecto de las élites y sus intereses en disputa. Para ello nos serviremos del análisis y contraste de la voz local del campesinado indígena libre en Chimborazo con aquella de la élite parlamentaria en el poder central.
