Para poder matizar las visiones ortodoxas sobre la articulación internacional exitosa de los
espacios económicos subnacionales, este artículo efectúa una aproximación crítica a las “zonas económicas especiales” como instrumentos para alcanzar un desarrollo equilibrado
y equitativo entre regiones. En la primera sección, buscando complejizar la tradicional definición jurídico-administrativa de la noción de zonas económicas especiales, se efectúa un breve recuento de las distintas escuelas del pensamiento económico en las cuales la aglomeración de empresas
en el espacio aparece como una fuerza productiva. Luego, se ubica el interés contemporáneo de los formuladores de políticas por las zonas económicas especiales dentro del contexto,
motivaciones e implicaciones de los nuevos discursos sobre el desarrollo en los cuales “el milagro chino” aparece como una alternativa al neoliberalismo occidental. Conforme se revisan aspectos de las reformas implementadas en China desde 1978, el artículo evidencia que las distintas variedades de zonas especiales fueron concebidas siguiendo una lógica de economía política, esto es, concibiéndolas como instrumentos cuya viabilidad suponía lograr ciertas condiciones políticas para así satisfacer objetivos no delimitados
por las variables económicas convencionales. Para concluir, una vez efectuadas ciertas acotaciones con respecto a la relación entre
las zonas económicas especiales y las transformaciones urbano-regionales en China, se efectúan algunas sugerencias para la formulación de políticas en los países en desarrollo.
