El presente trabajo explora la piratería somalí contemporánea como un desafío para las relaciones internacionales. La primera parte analiza las teorías de relaciones internacionales así: idealismo contra realismo, y luego realismo contra constructivismo para situar a la piratería contemporánea somalí dentro del análisis constructivista de relaciones internacionales. Busca responder a la pregunta ¿Qué teoría de relaciones internacionales puede explicar la piratería como desafío internacional? El capítulo histórico indaga las causas históricas de la piratería como fenómeno social, y especialmente las contemporáneas, vinculándolas con las históricas, y sus características. Todo aquello se enlaza la caótica historia contemporánea de Somalia, y el fenómeno de la piratería somalí: un desafío para las relaciones internacionales. Finalmente se define y contextualiza la piratería somalí en el marco de las relaciones internacionales y sus teorías realista-neorrealista, liberal (especialmente regímenes) y constructivista para responder a la pregunta clave
