Las prácticas sociales de producción de territorios, los medios políticos de modelamiento de lo urbano, así como los efectos económicos de dinamización desde las centralidades, han reflejado en las últimas décadas conflictivas formas de configuración de las ciudades. En cada uno de los niveles y subniveles territoriales, la interrelación entre espacio y actores compone modos particulares de construcción territorial. En el contexto local, las ciudades de pequeña escala y sus centralidades se presentan como los escenarios de producción de identidades; pero a la vez como espacios de continua disputa por las valoraciones materiales y simbólicas que cobran estos espacios. En la conflictividad, la dialéctica entre lógicas racionalizadas y lógicas sociales interactúa dentro de aspectos económicos, políticos y culturales de cada temporalidad. De esta manera, en espacios territoriales diversos de un entorno urbano, como la Plaza de Ponchos de la ciudad de Otavalo y las prácticas de actores sociales como los grupos indígenas, ponen en evidencia la contrastada configuración, construcción y producción de territorios; que en el contexto actual, se debaten entre la multifuncionalidad guiada desde la perspectiva Municipal y la multiterritorialidad expresada por comerciantes de la localidad.
