Trece millones de personas viven en Ecuador, territorio caracterizado por poseer una mega diversidad biológica y cultural. En el país conviven población blanca, mestiza, indígena y afro ecuatoriana. Los pueblos indígenas se asientan en las cuatro regiones geográficas del país. La población afro ecuatoriana se asienta en la provincia de Esmeraldas, en la Costa, y en la provincia de Imbabura, en la Sierra, por efectos de la migración existen también importantes asentamientos afro ecuatorianos en Quito y Guayaquil. Los territorios que limitan con Colombia han recibido en los últimos años refugiados y desplazados campesinos e indígenas. Debemos considerar que los pueblos awa kwaiker, siona, secoya y shuar se asientan en los dos territorios
