Las escuelas y facultades de Comunicación Social generalmente forman profesionales para que trabajen en diversos medios, pero no sobre temas específicos, ámbito de la especialización que se convierte en una necesidad para desempeñarse exitosa y apropiadamente en algunas áreas. Tal es el caso del periodismo científico que se impone a causa de la constante evolución científica y tecnológica de nuestra época y que juega un papel importante para la difusión amplia del conocimiento, hasta ahora reservado a las élites científicas y tecnológicas del saber.
