Tan lejos como podemos entrever, nuestra época se debate en situación similar a la del siglo XIII, cuando el absolutismo papal tuvo que afrontar una herejía que amenazaba diluir la comunidad de los fieles: la peligrosa idea de que los cristianos podían permanecer unidos alrededor de la fe, sin estarlo bajo la autoridad de una iglesia.
Tomás de Aquino y Guillermo de Occam, dos hombres de la iglesia, modificaron entonces los medios de enseñanza. Desde el monasterio, el empleo de la lección (leetia) y la discusión (disputatia), fundamentos de la Escolástica (del título "scholasticus", dado a los maestros en las escuelas y universidades), contribuyó a sistematizar el saber que emanaba del florecimiento de las ciudades.
