Las primeras imágenes en movimiento tienen que ver con la documentación: salida d obreros de las fábricas, vistas de calles, hombres y mujeres en la cotidianidad; presencias proyectadas en la pantalla para asombro de gentes. Luego, el documentar con imágenes pasa a ser objeto de atención de los cientistas, fundamentalmente antropólogos, etnólogos, zoólogos, etc.; contribuyendo así a la naciente antropología. EI cine fue una de las tecnologías más idóneas para los primeros viajeros que recogieron imágenes y vivencias de las culturas en todo el mundo. El "otro" cultural -el negro, el indígena, el primitivo, a los ojos de una sociedad aristocrática, muchas veces victoriana, ideológicamente hegemónica-fue objeto de estudio, de documentación, por la vía del cine y de la fotografía. Emile de Brigard, un analista norteamericano, precisa que allá nace lo que hoy se conoce como "antropología visual".
